Excerpt from Gethyon

“Hello, there.” The bright voice snapped Gethyon from his brooding, and he glanced up. A girl with silver skin and black tiger-stripe markings smiled down at him, her crop of red hair almost blood-colored in the twilight.
He lifted a hand in silent greeting.
“You’re Gethyon, aren’t you? Gethyon Rees?” Despite the blandness of his welcome, she hunkered down into the sand, wiggling her backside in an effort to get comfy, with a crooked grin on her lips. Unease coursed down his spine at her expression. It reminded him all too closely of another face, one with hair a paler shade of auburn and sapphire eyes.
He nodded confirmation.
“I’m Jinxuri Chei-har of the Veen,” she said.
This time Gethyon couldn’t restrain a smile. “That’s some name.”
The girl shrugged. “I didn’t choose it. But you can call me Jinx, if you like.” At that, she thrust out a hand, and after a moment, he took it.
Sudden pain splintered through his arm into his chest, and he yanked his hand free to massage the feeling away. He stared at Jinx, but she just continued to grin at him.
“Are you a friend of Dephon’s?” he asked, with a trace of suspicion. Was this something his old rival had set up to keep him occupied?
“Not really. I heard there was a party, so I stopped by.”
“You’re a gatecrasher?”
Jinx leaned forward and whispered in conspiratorial tones, “Not going to give me away, are you?”
Gethyon shook his head. Why should he care? It wasn’t his party.
She leaned back and eyed him carefully. “You don’t seem very happy. Aren’t you enjoying yourself?”
Gethyon shrugged.
“Not your kind of thing, huh? I’ve been told you’re a bit of a genius with technology.”
“Who told you that?”
“Oh, I hear things. I’m good at it.” She smiled. “You live with Professor Rees, don’t you? Heard a lot about him. Well-respected man. Your grandfather, yes?”
“Yes.”
“What about your parents, what do they do?”
He stiffened and drew back. “Why do you want to know about my parents?”
Jinx held up her hands. “I’m just trying to make conversation.”
A fragment of guilt squirmed in his stomach. Give her a break. Not everyone is out to get you. After all, living with a grandparent was going to make new people curious. It wasn’t the norm. “My father was killed in an explosion. My mother…travels. A lot.”
“I’m sorry about your father. That’s kinda harsh. But your mother sounds fun! Don’t you get to go with her?”
“No.”
Jinx gave him a sympathetic look. “Bad choice of subject?”
“Yes.”
She chuckled. “You’re really making me work for this conversation, Geth. What would you like to talk about?”
“Where are you from?”
She paused as if she hadn’t expected such a question. “No one place,” she murmured. “I travel a lot too.”

Abandoned. Hunted. Out of control.

Gethyon Rees had always felt at odds with the universe, and hoped for an escape among the stars. But discovering he has the ability to cross time and space with just a thought brings more problems than it solves: a deadly bounty hunter who can follow him anywhere, the unwelcome return of Tarquin Secker—the mother who abandoned him—and an ancient darkness that seeks him and all those with his talents.

When an unforgivable act sets him on the run, it’ll take more than his unearthly powers to save his skin and the lives of those he cares about. It’ll take a sacrifice he never expected to have to make.

A science fiction adventure novel previously published by BURST (Champagne Books), and part of the Travellers Universe. A 2014 SFR Galaxy Award Winner for Most Awesome Psychic Talent and a 2015 EPIC eBook Awards finalist in the Science Fiction category. Also now includes the SF short story The Bones of the Sea.

Excerpt: A Tale Of Two Colonies

The Adventures of the Everyday Fangirl is happy to present the cover image and excerpt from A Tale of Two Colonies by Aurora Springer.

A TALE OF TWO COLONIES

Fight for freedom. Fight to survive. For refugees from an overcrowded Terra, dreams of a better life on an alien planet transform into a terrifying battle for survival.
Nothing will stand in the way of Tiger Lily’s dream of escaping the subterranean slums of Terra and visiting the stars. She enters the fierce competition for a place in the scout team on the next spaceship to the remote planet of Delta, where an earlier colony disappeared. Before the ship departs, the arrival of a mysterious message from Delta suggests that the descendants of the first colonists may have survived.
A dangerous mission to seek the lost colony exposes the team to unexpected dangers, and they encounter a grim warrior in the isolated valley. Has Tiger Lily met her match in the tortured man? Where is he leading them? And who are the real rulers of this strange world?

Excerpt from A Tale of Two Colonies

Lily leaned against Conley and relaxed with the boulder supporting her back. She closed her eyes, feeling sleepy in the warm afternoon sun.
Conley shifted slightly. “Lily?” he said softly.
“Yes,” she opened her eyes. He was gazing into her face.
“Thank you,” he said, and kissed her lips.
She slid her arms around his neck and leaned into his embrace. It was peaceful lying in the sun with a faint humming sound in the distance. As they kissed, the sound grew louder.
Suddenly, Conley broke away and leapt to his feet with a warning yell, “Stripers!”
Looking up, Lily discovered the sound came from giant orange striped insects flying above. She struggled erect and pulled out her laser. Conley jumped high to slash with his long sword at the zooming insects, which were attacking in formation. Ranks of huge insects advanced toward their camp. They had two pairs of vibrating wings and bore a stinger on their tails.
Tiger Lily swung into action, firing her laser beam and severing the bulging orange bodies. They kept attacking; swooping down and quickly soaring out of reach. Lily and Conley moved together, standing back to back for protection, while swiping at the heads of the flying monsters.
Lily flipped her wrist com into view, and yelled, “John, watch out for giant wasps!”
Kevin came out of the tent, carrying a black box and sat adjusting the controls. Ming ran to cover him, shooting with a laser in each hand. A high pitched sound pierced their ears briefly as Kevin swept through the spectrum of ultrasound frequencies. There was no reaction from the attacking stripers. Some creatures landed on the ground and crawled toward the humans. Soon, they were attacking from all directions, from the air and the ground.
A minute later, John and Max ran into sight toting the loaded water bags. Max raced over to help Kevin with the controls on the box, while John moved to assist Ming in keeping the stripers away from them. Max jiggered the weapon box, frowning at the readings, and, very soon, he called out, “Cover your eyes.”
A blinding light flashed from the box, and the giant attackers dispersed, regrouping into their formations and flying swiftly to the north.
Conley lowered his sword. He had fought while hopping about with one bare foot. Lily stood by him, recovering her breath as she watched the yellow stripers flying away. She hoped for a longer respite, but Conley spoke urgently, “Move off quickly! Not safe here. Striper hive is nearby. They will attack again soon.”

The eBook will be on sale for 99c from Oct 22-31 via Amazon.com.

Cover reveal: Must Remember

The Adventures of the Everyday Fangirl is proud to reveal the cover for the first book in The Solum series, Must Remember, by Colleen S. Myers.

Nineteen-year-old Elizabeth ‘Beta’ Camden is a survivor.

When the E’mani—those pale alien freaks—destroy Earth with a plague of madness and scoop up the remains, Beta is one of the ‘lucky’ ones. For years, she endures their tortures, experiments and games. Then one day, she manages to escape their ship with her life, and no memory of her time with them.

Stranded on their world, Beta wanders the mountains, looking for a way home. She stumbles onto the Fost—the E’mani’s ancient enemy. Their war with the E’mani is old and rooted in magic that the Fost once had and the E’mani crave. Magic Beta soon discovers she’s developing along with strange tattoos and disturbing glimpses of her past. The Fost take her in and train her in their ways. As she spends more time with them, she falls in love with their culture and with Marin—he of the hot hands and slit eyes.

But the E’mani took her for a reason and they want her back—dead or alive. If Beta doesn’t remember that reason soon, they’re all going to die.

Below is an Excerpt from Must Remember:

Oy. No more weekday frat parties for me, no matter how
noble the cause, especially when I have a test the next day. What was
I thinking? And last minute cramming with a headache was not a
good idea either. Forget it. My eyes drifted to the clock.

And now I was late. Damn it. With a sigh, I threw down my
pencil and scrambled up, my head throbbing. I traded my Eeyore
jammies for skinny jeans and a fitted white t-shirt. Shoes, where
were my shoes? Gah. I ducked and rooted around in the deep, dark
spaces under my bed. Hmm, the green dress I borrowed from Sarah.
Mental note: I need to return that. English book, various dust
bunnies of uncertain lineage…there.

Sketchers on, I grabbed my backpack, turned up my iPod,
and ran out the door. No time to primp.

Good thing the campus I lived on was small. There was a big
central courtyard—the quad—filled with towering oak trees and
wide-open spaces surrounded by squat school buildings and
classrooms. If I hurried, I’d make it…

I raced into the quad out of breath and slowed, turning in a
complete circle.

Huh.

No one around. Unease skittered through me on soft paws.
The courtyard was always busy. I pulled my headphones out of my
ears. Was there some sort of event I didn’t know about going on?
The unnatural silence pressed in on me for a second as the
echoes of my steps faded.

Then screams—men’s and women’s—poured from Main
Street. I broke into a run and shot between the buildings toward the
sound.

Cars littered the intersection. Some guy rear-ended someone
else, causing a chain reaction down the road. A horn blared nearby
and a faint breeze blew the smell of gasoline, smoke, and copper my
way. Clusters of people stood among the wreckage.

Colleen plays many roles. Not only is she a veteran, a mother, and a practicing physician, but she is a writer of science fiction and contemporary romances. Colleen’s dreams include surviving her son’s teenage years, exploring every continent on this planet, except Antartica, cause that’s way too cold, and winning the Nobel peace prize. Dream BIG! Currently she is getting ready to publish her first novel, MUST REMEMBER in November of this year. Backlash is the prequel novella to The Wildblood series by S. A. Hoag. Set on a near-future Earth mostly devoid of humans, this reveals some of the harsh realities facing people of The Vista, and how Team Three began.
Before Team Three became Team Three, there was The Blackout.

That is, until a new threat appears, one they never expected and one they have little defense against. Security throws in everything they can muster; it quickly takes a toll. Their advantage – an untested team of officers barely more than children themselves; officers with dark secrets and a hidden agenda.

In a free-for-all battle to preserve one of the last sanctuaries of man, Team Three discovers their secrets are their strength and that their future will take them far beyond what they’ve ever known.

Action, a bit of romance and a good splash of sci-fi set the scene for Backlash, the prequel novella of The Wildblood series.

“Shannon,” her radio crackled static, snapping her out of a restless sleep. It was Wade on his private channel.

“Go ahead,” she answered groggily. Her watch read 9:30 pm and she was supposed to go on duty at 2:00 am. An hour – she’d been asleep an hour.

“Gear up. I’ll be there in five minutes to get you.”

“What’s going on?” she wondered, rubbing her eyes.

“Don’t ask, just do.”

He didn’t sound like they might be playing wargames. Shan moved.

Her mother was in the kitchen. Deirdre Allen was five foot three, with pale blond
hair, hazel eyes, and was one of The Vista’s actual doctors. She’d been twenty-nine when civilization ended. “The hospital just called me in,” she announced. “Are you on-call?”

“I am now. Wade didn’t tell me why.”

War games?

“No,” Shan told her. “Not this time. I know you don’t like carrying, but I think this is serious. Take a sidearm, Mom, please.”

Deirdre nodded. “For your peace of mind I will.” She knew how to use it; she’d been forced to in the past and hoped she never would again. “Whatever it is, be careful.”

“I am, and Wade wouldn’t let me get away with anything else.”

She hugged her. “I mean it.”

“I’ll see you in the morning,” Shan said, hearing a car. “That’s Wade. If he tells me it’s practice, I’ll let you know.” She didn’t think it was likely, but he’d fooled her before.

The moment she dropped into the passenger seat, she knew it was real. “Can you tell me now?” She’d dressed in winter camos with body armor, both Sigs and a boot gun, clips in all her pockets, plus an array of knives. Her pack held spare ammo, food rations and various bits of survival equipment.

He glanced sideways at her, heading towards Station Two with a purpose. “We lost a Scout at Wisdom about an hour ago.”

“Lost?” she repeated, not expecting it.

S. A. Hoag is an author, lapidary artist, very amateur astronomer (“I just look at the stars, I can’t name ’em.”), and accidental desert-dweller. Born in the middle of Colorado, more specifically Salida, she has lived in a number of cities in a number of states before crash-landing in the New Mexico desert. Not Roswell, however. Science Fiction has always been her first interest in reading and writing; many other genres sneak into the novels and that’s alright with her.

Introducing Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened

It is my honor to reveal the full title and cover of the first part of a YA dystopian romance trilogy by author, friend (full disclosure) AND fellow Fangirl, Pippa Jay.

Introducing Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened!

IMG_2166

Imagine waking up to find the world has ended, but unfortunately you’re not alone…
For Connor Innis, awakening from a year-long coma with no memories, no ability to move, and unable to speak was bad enough. Then he learns that a bioweapon set off a zombie apocalypse—for real—while he was sleeping, and the world he can’t even remember no longer exists.
Rehabilitation might be torture, but far worse awaits him outside. All too soon, the hospital Mentor declares him fit to leave but with nothing to go home to except a city full of mindless, flesh-eating monsters. That is, until he forms a strange relationship with the one he nicknames ‘Zombie Girl’.

Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened is the first part of a YA dystopian romance trilogy, releasing 22nd April, 2015. You can add it to your Goodreads shelf HERE, or sign up for Pippa’s no-spam newsletter for special previews on cover reveals, new releases, the latest giveaways and discounts, and upcoming news HERE!

Excerpt from Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened

The door slid open, and a warm breeze hit him full in the face, the smell of hot glass and tarmac, and a faint scent of grass from the garden area. Nothing more. The Mentor had assured him that the bioweapon had died out as quickly as it had contaminated everyone, job done. Even so, he drew his next breath with caution.
Like I’m just going to go straight into full on zombie mode… It didn’t ease his nerves. No point standing around here waiting for it.
Connor took a step outside. The heat after the temperature controlled interior broke him out in a sweat. He turned back to ask the Mentor one more time to change its mind in these unusual circumstances, but the glass door slid shut.
He bolted for the car. “Open the door!”
The autocar complied, and he threw himself into it, not caring that he banged his head and shoulder getting in, not caring that it put sparks in front of his eyes. “Shut it.”
The reassuring clunk of the door closing answered him, and he collapsed across the seat on his back, gasping like he’d done after his first session on the treadmill. “Oh, man.”
Connor sat up, staring around. Still no signs of life. The glass front of the hospital dazzled him as sunlight struck it, and the breeze blew the grasses and plants around in a mad dance, but that was it.
“Take me home,” he muttered.
“Yes, sir.” The autocar trundled forward and carried him away from sanctuary.
Safely in the confines of the vehicle, he examined the surroundings as he travelled. Except for the total absence of people, the city looked perfectly normal. No. Connor corrected himself. Not normal. It was too clean. Too perfect. The city equivalent of a show home, made up to look like the perfect place to move into, but utterly devoid of personal belongings. Devoid of life. Without the drain on the power systems by several thousands of human beings, and without them making a mess any more, the cleaning systems had kept the city pristine. Just like the hospital. No rubbish, no dirt, and no corpses. It was creepier than any abandoned city of the past, like those the Mentor had shown him. No sign of the deadly apocalypse that had killed part of the population and turned another part into a mindless ravening horde that devoured the survivors.

Cover Reveal and Excerpt for ‘Hallow’s Eve’

It is again my honor to reveal another cover by author, friend (full disclosure) AND fellow Fangirl, Pippa Jay!

This time it is a Halloween themed Romance titled “Hallow’s Eve“!

IMG_2015.JPG

Can one night of magic heal his heart?

12 months ago, Hal’s world crashed and burned, taking the love of his life with it. He’s waited all year for that one special night when the souls of the departed come home, hoping his candle will summon back one in particular to heal his broken heart. But the forbidden knowledge he’s learned could call something far worse, and put more than his own soul at risk…

Excerpt from the story:

The thud and chink of beer bottles and glasses on the bar announced Dan’s return.
“So?”
Hal shook his head. “Not tonight.”
“Oh, c’mon, man. Just one beer.”
Hal dropped his gaze to the glass he was still drying with a vehemence it didn’t deserve, avoiding his friend’s pleading stare. “Thanks, but I’m not in the mood.”
Dan made an exasperated sound. “Look, I know it’s nearly a year—”
Pain lanced into his chest. “Stop.” He looked up.
A frown creasing his tanned face, Dan glared back, but he shut up.
Hal sucked in a breath. He didn’t want to fight with Dan over this. The guy had stopped Hal’s life completely falling apart after last Halloween. “I know what you’re trying to do,” he murmured, and relief flickered in Dan’s brown eyes. “But I’m not ready to let it go.”
“I’m not saying you should, man. But how about getting back into some social interaction? You can’t spend the rest of your life as a recluse.”
“I won’t.” Hal smiled. Dan had no idea.
“Then come out for a beer.”
“Another time.”
“Tomorrow then. I know you’ve got the Halloween shift off.”
Hal put down the glass he’d abused. “I’m busy.”
“Oh, yeah? Doing what? Trick or treating?” Dan scoffed. “What is it with you and Halloween? You never struck me as religious enough to find it offensive, but you don’t go out and have any fun either. So how come you always take the night off?”
Hal looked around the bar at all the tawdry holiday decorations, and debated how to answer. Maybe Dan thought he was a closet Christian or something. The truth would shock the hell out of him. Especially with what Hal had planned this year. “My…family don’t see it as something to joke about.”
“Oh. Strict Catholic or something?”
“Something like that.” Hal smiled at the thought of his parents taking Holy Communion. But let Dan interpret it any way he liked.
