The Challenges of Writing Short Stories by Veronica Scott

I usually think and write in novel length format, but in 2016 I accepted a couple of challenges to write shorter, for three very different anthologies. The collections are no longer available, so I’ve put the three stories together in one volume myself now and released them under the very unwieldy title Star Cruise A Novella: Stowaway Plus Rescue and Token Short Stories. I thought it was really important to be clear that the book doesn’t contain three novel-length works. But wow, what a title, right?

I thought I’d talk a little bit about the stories and why I wrote them. First of all, if I’m going to come up with a 9k to 25K story that has a beginning, a middle and an end, plus the HEA, I needed to work within my already established futuristic universe, the Sectors. This allowed me to show new readers a bit of my worldbuilding by giving them the feeling there is a well-defined setting, and people who have read my books will feel right at home and perhaps see some familiar characters in supporting roles. To that end, two of the stories involve the crew of my luxurious interstellar space liner, the Nebula Zephyr. Of course I’m also hoping new readers will want to dash off and read more Sectors stories after finishing these!

Pauline B. Jones and I had the idea to create an anthology that blended pets into stories of scifi romance and adventure, which became the award winning Pets In Space, with seven other terrific authors. For that project, I wrote Star Cruise: Stowaway and created one alien pet, added in a ship’s cat, and took off with a romantic suspense story. (The blurbs are given below.) I had so much fun writing this and became so intrigued with the addition of a major interstellar crime syndicate to my Sectors, that I wrote another full novel, Danger in the Stars (which released in April), and am now working on a second novel that explores some other aspects of romance and adventure the mob and the captive empaths provided. So as an author, I think taking the time to do this novella really worked for me, and readers were very kind with their reviews. We are doing a Pets In Space 2 this year, by the way with a slightly different mix of authors.

Star Cruise: Rescue was for an anthology with mostly or all Science Fiction Romance Brigade authors and there was no central theme, so I brainstormed what kind of mischief my crew members might get into if they spent an evening on a planet. Fortunately around this time I read an article in Business Week of all places, discussing curated events for the very wealthy. I had an ‘a ha’ moment about how the bored, rich ‘Socialites’ traveling on board the Nebula Zephyr might end up taking a crew member with them to such an exclusive event and the trouble that might ensue.

The third anthology was Dealer’s Choice, for the 2016 RT Booklovers Convention and was a limited edition paperback, only handed out at Linnea Sinclair’s Interstellar Bar & Grille event. (I was a co-host.) There was no way I was going to miss a chance to be in an anthology with Linnea Sinclair and to have my story edited by her as part of the process! She gives great notes by the way. The unifying theme of the collection was to involve a scifi casino as the setting. Now I do have a casino on the Nebula Zephyr, but for some reason I wanted to write a story in the style of a classic Western, where the hero rides into town, gets involved with the local problems, falls in love with a dancehall girl and….HEA ensues. So I put the story on a space station with a casino, but still in the Sectors. The Golden Token is the title of this story.

I find I enjoy writing the occasional short story or novella as a change, and it can be something of a ‘palate cleanser’ for the Muse, before diving back into my longer novels. I was also happily surprised to have the characters in the Stowaway novella prompt me to now write two more novels that hadn’t been on my mind at all. I seem to be able to hit the different word limits of each project, which is satisfying as an author. I think my biggest challenge or frustration perhaps is that I tend to take my time for my characters to reach the point where they experience physical intimacy, so a novella or short story from me doesn’t give the full flavor of one of my novels, which do usually contain a few moderately warm bedroom scenes. (I’m a 3 on a 5 point scale of steaminess.). I’d definitely consider doing another anthology project someday, besides the Pets in Space series.

Thanks again for having me as a guest here and I look forward to guest blogging here in the future!

As a special treat, here is an excerpt from one of the short stories The Golden Token.  Charlie has just arrived on the space station and expects to connect with his next ship immediately but learns there’ll be a delay of several days:

He plucked his ticket from the man’s fingers, taking a glance to see how much oxygen tax he was paying. “Wait, there’s some mistake here. I’m not staying on the Station.”
Tongue between his teeth as he concentrated, the station agent reviewed the information on the screen before him. “You’re hopping a ride on the Centauri Dawn to your destination in Sector 46, right?”
“Yes, but she’s supposed to be docking later today.”
The clerk shrugged. “Updated info as of an hour ago. Ran into some rogue comets. She won’t be here for three days. Be glad she’s coming at all, would be my advice.” A small alarm sounded and the man held up one hand. “Hold on, this could be your lucky day.”
“I fail to see how.”
“Says here you’re arrival number one hundred for this cycle and entitled to a golden token, redeemable at the Hall of Good Fortune.” He handed Charlie a large, fake gold coin, embossed with a dragon on one side and blank on the other.
Astonished, Charlie flipped the coin over. “You must be kidding me. Nobody uses metal money these days, not even in a backwater Sector like this.”
The clerk said, “That’s for gambling at the Station’s casino, up on Level A. Only place to get drinks, gamble, have some fun. Depending on your preferences, of course. The menu’s not as extensive as it used to be in the old days. Kumisarc Corporation’s always cutting back.”
In an effort to stem the tide of the now-garrulous agent’s information, Charlie asked, “This station got a hotel?”
“Temporary housing only for non-residents, rents by the day. I can reserve you a unit.”
Charlie scanned the lobby. There were a few seats on the far wall and he knew he’d seen some in the arrival area.
“Security don’t allow vagrants,” the man said as if reading his mind. “No camping out in the waiting areas. Even with a valid transfer ticket.”
He stifled a growl of irritation, drumming his fingers on the counter. So far this station was a racket, trying to separate him from his credits and doing a good job of it. “How much for the room?”
Not surprised to be quoted a predictably exorbitant price, Charlie set the useless coin on the counter while he transferred the credits, got his code key strip and picked up his bag, ready to make the best of his unexpected layover.
“Hey, don’t forget the token.” The clerk held it up before tossing it to him. “This plus a few credits’ll get you a drink or a spin of the roulette wheel. Not good for much else.”
Charlie made a one-handed catch and slid the disc into a pocket on his utility pants.
“No open carry weapons, by the way,” the clerk said, leaning over the counter. “Gotta keep them stowed in your baggage. Security does a body scan before anyone gets into the casino. They get real upset if they see weapons. Had a few incidents with hotheaded miners over the years, trying to settle their personal grievances with blasters. Tempers are short these days.”

I hope you enjoyed this sneak peak!

Life aboard the Nebula Zephyr has just become more interesting – and deadly.

The Golden Token: Sectors Special Forces operator Charlie McBrire had a few days to kill on a layover at Space Station 47. He never expected to find himself in the middle of a miners’ rebellion, fighting to save the life of a casino dancer he just met but can’t imagine living without.

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars Is Here!

I am a Sailor Moon fan from way back when this series aired on Cartoon Network. I have collected all of the officially released versions of the series including the DiC dub VHS and DVD version, to the Pioneer DVDs and finally to the ADV subtitled DVD sets.

However, I was not able to view or buy, through any of these offical versions, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. The only version available in the USA was a bootleg, like this one pictured below, which included poor picture quality and poorly translated subtitles.

img_3633
Thanks to VIZ Media, Sailor Moon Sailor Stars has FINALLY been officially released here in the United States, legally and available for me to watch anytime and anywhere! This makes me a very, very happy Sailor Moon Fangirl!

These never before officially released episodes started streaming on Hulu and Neon Alley December 14th with what is considered to be the ending of the Dream Arc, which shows how Sailor Moon transformed into her true form, Eternal Sailor Moon.

 img_3639

However, this week starts the arc that many fans thought would never come, the arrival of the Sailor Star Lights and the official start of season 5 of Sailor Moon!

I am so looking forward to watching two episodes of these every week and of course will be waiting for the Dub version and the BluRay/DVD release as well.

Are you a fan of Sailor Moon?  Have you been looking forward to the official release of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars as I have?

Sojourn’s Future–And you get a say!

Surviving Sojourn3 vibrant banner simple

Sojourn’s future

When Sojourn entered the ship as an ensign he was one day old.

Sojourn on ship (400x640)Good thing Captain Longfellow requested he be aged to twenty since a ship was not place for a baby. Otherwise, his obnoxious crew mates would have tossed him in the recycling unit the first time he cried out in hunger.

Born with the thoughts of Blue, the King of Terranue, and his three parents, Sojourn knew without a doubt he was born to do something fabulous.

Normally an ensign is promoted or dumped after six months. An Outbound ship has no room for a slacker. Initially Sojourn expected to be promoted within a month. Every time the captain called him to the brig, he expected a promotion. However, thus far, each time he’d received a scolding and brig time.

Sojourn is certain the reason he can’t get promoted is because Captain Longfellow knows Sojourn is only a year old, and thus treats him like an overly tall baby.

When he breaks through the Ensign Barrier, his speed to captain is horrifically fast. Horrific because ensigns aren’t taught a thing about being a captain. In a single day he was promoted from ensign to acting lieutenant then to captain.

But his trials, tribulations and grand teamwork, not to mention an advantageous marriage, are just what we needed to kick off the new Series called IN SEARCH OF SENTIENTS. Sojourn and his fabulous crew of aliens, spirits, and humans will go forth to discover new forms of sentient life and bring them into the folds of the Council of the Universes.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the sentients they will find.  Here are some possible covers and the key aliens involved. I would love to know which books you would like to read first, so rank which of these should be book #1.

The Planet Will

Will the planet If you recall in book 3 of the Multiverses, Captain Longfellow shared a story in which Drogan warned him the planet they intended to land upon was actually a sentient being. While the planet didn’t mind people stopping to pick his vegetables and fruits, he did not like being hurt. Thus, they landed on a rock, did not take weapons while gathering food, and left quickly when one idiot crewman tried to cut a giant diamond out of the ground with a pen laser. The ground literally opened up and swallowed him.

Well, since the captain left, someone placed a satellite beacon in the planet’s atmosphere with a high risk warning, which has stopped everyone from visiting the planet. The poor planet has been starving ever since. When Sojourn arrives to stock up on fruits and vegetables that won’t make anyone sick, he ignores the warning and sets down on the large rock. The place is no longer the Garden of Eden Drogan had described. Everything is dying. The planet needs meat, but it has to be from something evil. The planet Will refuses to eat nice people. Drogan believes this is a job the Gods can handle and thankfully, he might be able to contact one of them.

Loving Drogan

Loving Drogan2 400x640Drogan is vital for the path of light and that is his top priority, but he mentally and physically longs for someone to love as well.  Now that Captain Sojourn has a huge ship capable of quantum leaps previously thought to be impossible, their search for sentients will be much faster and easier. First Science officer Drogan led the team designing the ship’s new quantum mechanics, and they are beyond state of the art!

One of his crew is a brilliant young woman, beautiful both inside and out. Only Drogan doesn’t think he has a chance to win her heart, given he’s blue, with gills and webbed hands, so he tries his best to keep his distance.

Destiny is smart, but it’s nothing to how smart Drogan is. In all ways he is the greatest sentient she had ever known. She has no idea if they are compatible species, sexually speaking, but she secretly loves everything about Drogan and would be most willing to give it a go, only he doesn’t seemed interested in her as a female. She has no clue how to let him know of her interest without taking a big risk that doing so will get herself sent home from the finest ship ever built. Dare she risk everything for a chance for something that may not even be possible?

Camo

camo 2 5 400x640Camo lives on a reptilian world of extreme violence. Her father plans to give her to the strongest and deadliest of his warriors. Not willing to be Vitor’s twelfth wife in five years, she escapes and hides in the jungle. She knows they will search for her, but no one is better at disappearing than her. When a ship arrives, naturally, the warriors accuse the sickly white creatures of stealing her. Upon meeting some of the sentients, and discovering them to be brave and honorable, she asks for asylum on their ship. However, the captain has other plans for Camo. He needs her to step up and become Empress of the planet. The current violent leaders will not do.

The Gods approve the change and will move all the truly evil sentients to the planet Will if she will step up and lead her people to the Path of Light.  But no female has ever been leader before. Who will even accept her claim as Empress?

So pick your choice!

Slutopia: Funny Pulp SF Erotic Stories

With 50 Shades Of Grey heating up the Box Office and the book series still very popular with readers, there is definitely a desire for erotic stories.  However, a group of writers decided to take this concept in a slightly different direction.  They created a series of funny erotic stories that are in the style of pulp magazines back In the 1950’s.  The series of stories are marketed under the name Slutopia

I recently spoke to CA Speakman, who is the “public face” of the group, about the Slutopia series of stories and what motivated the authors to write these stories.

Slutopia produces high quality pulp erotic fiction.  While that may seem like an oxymoron, we take the most outlandish mashups of elements from science fiction, fantasy, horror and dark fiction then twist them into erotic fantasies with a wicked sense of humor.

Why write them? Writing for Slutopia is like being given the big box of crayons and a city-block-long white wall to draw on. You aren’t just coloring outside the lines; in this shared universe there are no lines to cross or to hold back your imagination. Many of the authors write for traditional category lines so this gives them the opportunity to break the rules and just have fun writing again.

All of the writers for this series are using fun pennames for the project like ‘Kassidy Kink’, ‘Hannah Hardcore’ and ‘Venus Galaxia’. Currently, there are a dozen stories in the anthology all by different authors available on Amazon. There is also a Kickstarter campaign, which is ending soon, to turn these stories into graphic novels. If you are a fan of erotic stories and like to mix it with some really crazy settings or story elements, then you may want to check these out.

Excerpt from Embers

On February 27thKaryn Pearson unveils the final chapter in the Hellfire trilogy

“Tell your master that I’m coming for him next,” she said. “We’re going to finish what we started.”

Excerpt from Embers:

A rushing sound filled her ears, Noxius’ power surged to life within her, willing her to dodge to the left. She whirled aside, watching as a hook-sword sailed within an inch of her, the blade singing in the air as it passed. A nearby soul cried out as the sword pierced him in a spray of blood. He slumped over and remained still, put out of his misery at last.

“I thought I smelled a mortal,” said the all-too-familiar voice of Malacoda. “What ever shall we do with you, my dear?”

“She’s pretty,” said a second voice. “Can we keep this one?”

“She is rather interesting, isn’t she?” Malacoda agreed. “How could a mortal make it so far into Hell unscathed?”

The sound of wings was all around them, the Malebranche laughing as they circled their prey. The huntress didn’t need to look to know she was surrounded. This was it, they were done for.

Run!” Noxius yelled. “We need to make it to the next ring!”

Ardentia didn’t need to be told twice. She broke into a sprint, moving as fast as she could down the road. Behind her, she heard Malacoda wrenching his sword from the body of the tortured soul he’d inadvertently killed. The demon was in quick pursuit; the huntress knew she’d be no match for his speed. He was upon her within a moment, so she did the only thing she could. She turned to fight.

Using her forward momentum, she made a quick about-face, swinging her leg as she turned. Her kick connected, the blow startling the demon for a few seconds, as black blood seeped from a fresh wound on his cheek. He snarled at her in rage, raising his hook and sweeping toward her. She dropped and rolled under it, the sword passing over her head harmlessly. Her feet were back under her in an instant, and she was up and running, the demon roaring from somewhere behind her as he chased after her again.

“Keep running!” Noxius encouraged. “We’re nearly there.”

She kept moving, her eyes finding the end of the road ahead and what looked like the edge of a cliff. As she neared the end of the road, she saw the ground gave way into a sharp drop of at least one-hundred feet to the next circle below. To the far right, she saw a set of stairs carved into the side of the cliff. She started for them at once, moving off the road and cutting across a line of staked bodies.

Suddenly, Malacoda materialized before them, standing at the cliff’s edge and barring their path. He smiled, thinking he had her cornered. In her mind, she heard her demon shouting for her to turn around and head the opposite direction. The huntress ignored him, running toward the demon instead.

She barreled straight into the demon, her full body weight slamming into him hard. He doubled over and gave a grunt of pain, losing his balance, and together, they tumbled off the cliff.

It all begins with a Spark . . .

Ardentia, a demon hunter with a demon’s spirit bound to her own, goes on a journey to restore honor to her mother’s name. One by one, she hunts down the Saligia, who are responsible for her family’s curse. The closer she gets to bringing the Seven Deadly Sins down, the higher the chances are she’ll lose herself along the way. As the demon inside her awakens and grows stronger, it will only be a matter of time. Ardentia faces but one choice—trust the demon to help her break the curse, and pray he doesn’t betray her in the end.

. . . and blazes into an Inferno . . .

A new threat has emerged. Belial, one of four Crown Princes of Hell, has risen. The Crown Prince intends to free the rest of his brothers. If he succeeds, he will raise Lucifer from his centuries’ long slumber. Belial will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. His influence even extends past the defenses of the holy city of Salvatio. The Crown Prince must be stopped before the last great defense of mankind falls. Ardentia stands to answer the call. She knows the task alone will be dangerous, and that she could easily die in the attempt. But the threat of certain death won’t sway her. She and Noxius will do whatever it takes to thwart Belial, regardless of the consequences, even if those consequences mean paying the ultimate price.

. . . leaving behind a world of Embers . . .

Though she won the battle against Belial, the war for mankind has just begun. Lucifer is rising. With each passing day, time runs out for the human race. In sixty-six days, the fate of the world will be decided. But before Ardentia can focus on saving the world, she must save her demon. Noxius is dying, and his only hope for survival is to return to his own body. Ardentia must brave the horrors of Hell and its armies to reach Noxius’ court. If she manages to survive, she’ll still need to face the Lucifer, and something far worse—a foe far greater than the Devil himself.

You can get your copy of Embers and the rest of the Hellfire Trilogy now at Smashwords and Amazon.

Embers will soon be available at store.distinguishedpress.com as well.

Introducing Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened

It is my honor to reveal the full title and cover of the first part of a YA dystopian romance trilogy by author, friend (full disclosure) AND fellow Fangirl, Pippa Jay.

Introducing Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened!

IMG_2166

Imagine waking up to find the world has ended, but unfortunately you’re not alone…
For Connor Innis, awakening from a year-long coma with no memories, no ability to move, and unable to speak was bad enough. Then he learns that a bioweapon set off a zombie apocalypse—for real—while he was sleeping, and the world he can’t even remember no longer exists.
Rehabilitation might be torture, but far worse awaits him outside. All too soon, the hospital Mentor declares him fit to leave but with nothing to go home to except a city full of mindless, flesh-eating monsters. That is, until he forms a strange relationship with the one he nicknames ‘Zombie Girl’.

Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened is the first part of a YA dystopian romance trilogy, releasing 22nd April, 2015. You can add it to your Goodreads shelf HERE, or sign up for Pippa’s no-spam newsletter for special previews on cover reveals, new releases, the latest giveaways and discounts, and upcoming news HERE!

Excerpt from Zombie Girl: Dead Awakened

The door slid open, and a warm breeze hit him full in the face, the smell of hot glass and tarmac, and a faint scent of grass from the garden area. Nothing more. The Mentor had assured him that the bioweapon had died out as quickly as it had contaminated everyone, job done. Even so, he drew his next breath with caution.
Like I’m just going to go straight into full on zombie mode… It didn’t ease his nerves. No point standing around here waiting for it.
Connor took a step outside. The heat after the temperature controlled interior broke him out in a sweat. He turned back to ask the Mentor one more time to change its mind in these unusual circumstances, but the glass door slid shut.
He bolted for the car. “Open the door!”
The autocar complied, and he threw himself into it, not caring that he banged his head and shoulder getting in, not caring that it put sparks in front of his eyes. “Shut it.”
The reassuring clunk of the door closing answered him, and he collapsed across the seat on his back, gasping like he’d done after his first session on the treadmill. “Oh, man.”
Connor sat up, staring around. Still no signs of life. The glass front of the hospital dazzled him as sunlight struck it, and the breeze blew the grasses and plants around in a mad dance, but that was it.
“Take me home,” he muttered.
“Yes, sir.” The autocar trundled forward and carried him away from sanctuary.
Safely in the confines of the vehicle, he examined the surroundings as he travelled. Except for the total absence of people, the city looked perfectly normal. No. Connor corrected himself. Not normal. It was too clean. Too perfect. The city equivalent of a show home, made up to look like the perfect place to move into, but utterly devoid of personal belongings. Devoid of life. Without the drain on the power systems by several thousands of human beings, and without them making a mess any more, the cleaning systems had kept the city pristine. Just like the hospital. No rubbish, no dirt, and no corpses. It was creepier than any abandoned city of the past, like those the Mentor had shown him. No sign of the deadly apocalypse that had killed part of the population and turned another part into a mindless ravening horde that devoured the survivors.

In between torturing her plethora of characters, she spends the odd free moment playing guitar very badly, punishing herself with freestyle street dance, and studying the Dark Side of the Force. Although happily settled in the historical town of Colchester in the UK with her husband of 21 years and three little monsters, she continues to roam the rest of the Universe in her head.

Pippa Jay is a dedicated member of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade, like I am, she blogs at Spacefreighters Lounge, Adventures in Scifi, and Romancing the Genres. Her works include a YA science fiction novel—Gethyon—published through BURST (Champagne Books), two self-published short stories (Terms & Conditions Apply and The Bones of the Sea), and she’s one of eight authors included in a science fiction romance anthology—Tales from the SFR Brigade. She’s also a double SFR Galaxy Award winner, been a finalist in the Heart of Denver RWA Aspen Gold Contest (3rd place), and the GCC RWA Silken Sands Star Awards (2nd place).

Excerpt from Saving Grace

It is my pleasure to share with you an excerpt from Saving Grace, the fourth story in the Amazing Grace series by author Misa Buckley.

Emery put his mug down. “Okay, so what now? We are gonna go get her out of there, right?”

Cupping his drink in his hands, Benedict considered the situation. Just the thought of Grace at Hammel, subjected to their horrific tests, made his blood run cold. Emery was right- they had to get her out. But that meant going in there himself, and he wasn’t sure he could. It wasn’t what they’d done to him, but what they’d made him do to others. He’d killed someone. Her name had been Eloise Suarez, and he’d burnt out her mind. And she was who he remembered killing–there was a good chance that there were others he couldn’t.

That he didn’t want to remember.

Shaking his head, he spoke in a low voice. “I can’t go into Hammel.”

Emery sat straighter. “What do you mean, can’t? You did it before.”

“And look where that got us!” Benedict took a breath and raked a hand through his hair. “I want Grace back. But if they have her, then they’ll be expecting a rescue attempt. They have a suppression field that dampens abilities. Not even I’m strong enough to counteract it. The only person who’s been able to manage that is Grace.”

“And she’s in a tank,” Charity said.

The thought made Benedict ill. “Yes.”

“We have to do something,” Emery stated.

“Don’t you think I know that? I know what they’ll do to her, what they’re probably already doing. Do you imagine I’d be sitting here if I’d any idea of how to get her out?” Benedict glared at the other man, frustration mingling with guilt. He wanted to act, but so had Grace and look where that had gotten her. “I’m no coward, Emery. But Hammel turned me into a weapon and I will not allow them to do so again. You know what they made me do. Now consider that used against you or Charity.”

With Grace held at Hammel, it’s down to her lover Benedict Thomas and the other “abnormals” he and Grace rescued to return the favour. Yet going back to the institute holds a special danger for Benedict – it was there that his powers were used to “train” others… and to kill those who didn’t make the grade.

Facing the nightmare of his past is one thing, but there is another that worries him even more: that he is playing right into the hands of the enemy.

Excerpt of Crisis at Validor by Greta van der Rol

IMG_2149

It is my honor to announce the release of Greta van der Rol’s latest science fiction romance novel Crisis at Validor.

This book stars Captain Brett Butcher, who appeared in the first two books in the series (The Iron Admiral: Conspiracy and The Iron Admiral: Deception) as Grand Admiral Saahren’s adjutant.

Here’s a short excerpt, when Tarlyn has realized it’s Brett who has rescued her from a deadly situation.

A skimcycle rocketed past their hiding place. Butcher waited a few more minutes, his finger poised over his pistol’s trigger.

Tarlyn tapped his hand resting on her arm. “Long enough. They hunt in packs.” She walked back to the road, her long skirt swirling around her legs, then stood for a moment, listening. “It sounds like it’s all over.”

No more sirens, shots or explosions, although smoke curled up into the sky from the direction of the temple square.

Tarlyn gazed up at him, searching his face. “You’re the last person on this planet I would have expected to see here, now. Are you still in the Confederacy Fleet?”

He swallowed. The years fell away and for a moment he was seventeen again, smitten and tongue-tied. Idiot. “Yes. Still in the Fleet. I’m on leave before I take over a new command. It’s been fifteen years since I was on Validor. I thought it was time I came home.”

Crisis at Validor synopsis

Newly-promoted Captain Brett Butcher is about to achieve his life-long ambition to command a battle cruiser. But before he takes up his new posting, he goes home on leave, hoping to perhaps catch a glimpse of his first love, the unattainable Lady Tarlyn.
When the queen is assassinated in a terrorist attack, Tarlyn’s life is thrown into turmoil when she, too, becomes a target. The last person she expects to rescue her is her childhood sweetheart, Brett Butcher.
As Validor’s Ptorix and human populations face off over a group of islands neither owns, the calls for war grow louder. Torn between love, duty and ambition, Butcher and Tarlyn struggle to prevent an inter-species conflict, while the ember of love that has smouldered for so long bursts into flame. But with planetary peace at stake, both will be forced to choose; love or duty.
